creating safe and caring schools

The Department of Education, will on Tuesday, 21 November 2006, host the
colloquium on creating safe and caring schools, at the St Georges Hotel, near
Pretoria.
The Minister of Education, Mrs Naledi Pandor, (MP), will address the
colloquium at 09h00. Several speakers, including three Deputy Ministers,
Members of Parliaments (MPs) and Members of the Executive Committee (MECs),
have been invited to the colloquium. (See the programme below for the list of
participants).
The colloquium comes after a number of calls by some organisations, that
there was a need for a national indaba to discuss the incidents of violence in
schools countrywide; themed, "Creating Safe and Caring Schools", its aims are
to:
* identify specific interventions that will promote the development of safe
and caring schools throughout the country
* forge sustainable partnerships with relevant stakeholders, including relevant
government departments, teacher unions, school governing body associations,
learners and the youth, civil society and non-governmental organisations
(NGOs)
* formulate a conceptual framework for schools at various stages of achieving
the aim of being safe and caring.
