The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Ms Neliswa Nkonyeni, will finalise the
Women's Month celebrations with a function to celebrate and advance the women
empowerment course. This will happen at Danhausser in Ntendeka, Ward 10 where
women from the Amajuba District will be educated on and briefed about
empowerment programmes that the department engages on.
The MEC started the Women's Month celebration trail and led a national call
for a fight against cancer. Her message has been 'early detection can save
lives!' The chances of surviving the onset of some common cancers depend
largely on how early they are detected and how well they are treated.
Amongst her maiden promises was to provide a best practice model for
empowerment of target groups, especially women. In her few months in the
department she introduced a programme called Targeted Enterprise Development,
which seeks to empower targeted groups like women, youth and the rural poor.
Around R19 million has been disbursed to these groups since the programme was
launched. This disbursement has been through the giving out of tenders to the
targeted groups for certain hospital functions like catering for staff and
patients, making of curtains and pyjamas and garden work.
During this event the MEC is expected to announce opportunities that women
have within the department and also give advice on how the department can help
women in their empowerment. The media is invited to attend this function and
also report on the proceedings. The details are as follows:
