N Mtsweni to host National Language Awareness Day, 11 Nov

National Language Awareness Day

7 November 2006

Mpumalanga MEC for the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation Ms Nomsa
Mtsweni will be hosting the National Language Awareness Day on Saturday, 11
November 2006 in Kameel Rivier Community Hall at Nkangala District.

Prior to 1994 the democratic elections, indigenous languages in South Africa
were marginalised, suppressed and made unofficial. They were regarded as
languages that would be difficult to be applied in the field of science,
technology and other subjects of civilisation; thus their development was
retarded.

Through this celebration, it is important that we recognise the day and we
also promote the use and development of all the South African languages by
raising awareness of the literary heritage of our country.

Such development will enable all our citizens to savour the experiences of
the nation as well as reaffirming the recent re-launched 'Fundza for Fun
Campaign' which encourages the culture of reading and the value of the power of
literacy amongst people of the province.

The event is expected to encourage all different ethnicities especially the
youth to learn at least one more language, which will then promote
multilingualism.

Various stakeholders including the Pan South African Language Board,
Provincial Language Committee and National Language Services will give messages
of support; also amongst expected guests will be the Mpumalanga Writer's
Association. Stakeholders have been invited for the occasion.
