Heritage Summit

12 September 2006

The MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Nomsa Mtsweni will be hosting the
Heritage Summit where various stakeholders in the arts, culture and heritage
fields in the Mpumalanga province will participate from 14 to 15 September 2006
at Badplaas Aventura, Albert Luthuli Municipality.

The purpose of the Summit is seen as a platform wherein the history and
heritage of the province will be communicated and all pertaining to industries
related to heritage will be consulted. In this summit people of Mpumalanga will
be afforded an opportunity to have a better understanding of the manuscript and
later be able to constructively critique it, until all stakeholders understand
it and own it as their provincial asset and the true reflection of the history
and heritage of the province. Again the manuscript will further empower the
delegates at the Summit with the information that can be taken into
consideration while they contribute in the commissions that will seek to shape
the future of the province as far as cultural industries and heritage is
concerned.

This will be done by the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation in
conjunction with relevant stakeholders.

Objectives of the Summit amongst others include:

* to begin consultation processes and implementation of the heritage
research project
* to identify the key roles of heritage and cultural industries in tourism and
local economic development
* to align heritage and cultural industries with national priorities
* to provide a consultation platform for further development of a Provincial
Draft Arts, Culture and Heritage Policy.

Planned outcomes:

* provincial position paper on cultural industries and heritage as
socio-economic drives to contribute in the PGDS.
* inputs to further develop Draft Arts, Culture and Heritage Policy
* build up towards the National Heritage Summit
