Housing to host Evaton Renewal Focus Week

1 October 2007

Progress made in the Evaton Renewal Programme will be the focus when the
Gauteng MEC for Housing, Nomvula Mokonyane, in co-operation with the Sedibeng
District municipality and Emfuleni Local Municipality launches the Evaton Focus
Week.

The Focus Week is aimed at marketing the Evaton Township to potential
investors as well as showcasing the progress made since the appointment of new
contractors to head the project. The launch will look into the development of,
among others, waste management, upgrading of houses and land acquisition.

The Evaton Renewal Programme has experienced a number of challenges which
resulted in the expulsion of a contractor for failing to deliver on
mandate.

The MEC announced during the Evaton Renewal Project general meeting earlier
this year that consistent monitoring of the project would take place to ensure
that the project is completed within the specified time.

The Evaton Urban Renewal focuses on development and upgrading projects with
the aim that the selected township socio and economic structures can be
rehabilitated, integrated and be able to sustain its own communities long term,
economically and otherwise.

Evaton Township was selected by the Gauteng Provincial Government mainly
because it symbolises the reality of black townships with low economic
activity, disjointed spatial planning and deteriorated municipal services.

The renewal project seeks not only to uplift the face of Evaton with regard
to infrastructure, but will also support current small businesses, develop new
entrepreneurs and also create employment for the people of Evaton.
