N Mapisa-Nqakula and T Makwetla to embark on Imbizo, 27 Oct

Home Affairs Minister takes Imbizo to child-headed families and
people living with disabilities in Moloto, Mpumalanga

25 October 2006

The Minister of Home Affairs Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will kick-start her
Imbizo by embarking on a "door-to-door" campaign aimed at interacting with
child-headed families and people living with disabilities in the Moloto area,
Mpumalanga province.

The Minister will be joined by Mpumalanga Premier, Thabang Makwetla during
the Imbizo. The Home Affairs Imbizo, which is part of the government-wide
Imbizo Focus Week, will be held under the theme: "Your ID the 1st Step to
Economic Empowerment."

"At the heart of a caring nation, is the recognition that we need to
challenge ourselves at all times about what or how can we do things differently
to ensure that the vulnerable communities in our midst are able to enjoy the
fruits our hard-won democracy", the Minister said ahead of the Imbizo,
today.

She added: "As government, the civil society and private sector we should
respond by launching at attack on poverty and underdevelopment. We therefore
believe that by ensuring that our vulnerable communities get their identity
documents (IDs) and other enabling documents we are positioning them to access
the socio-economic opportunities that this democratic government has created
for its entire people."

The Minister will later in the day, provide Home Affairs services such as
taking applications for IDs, birth and death certificates through the Mobile
Unit of the Department. Other government departments such as South African
Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Department of Labour will also offer their
services.
