R4 million social relief for victims of storm

9 March 2007

The Department of Social Development will disperse R4 million to 1 700
households affected by recent storms in the Jouberton, Manzilpark and Alabama
locations in Matlosana Municipality. The affected households have also been
receiving ready-made food and food parcels since the disaster struck on Sunday,
4 March 2007.

The social relief of distress will be offered for a period of three months
and converts to R800 per household. "We have an obligation to ensure that those
affected by disaster get appropriate assistance," said MEC for Social
Development Nikiwe Mangqo.

"Free counselling by social workers is offered to all who need it; we are
calling on all those who were affected and need help to come forward; they may
approach social development or municipal offices and make them aware of their
plight," said MEC Mangqo.

Government officials have been working around the clock to assist the
households affected through the distribution of blankets and provision of
medical assistance for those in need. Payment of the Social Relief of Distress
will begin today, 9 March 2007 at Brazil Stadium in Jouberton at 10h00.
