N Jajula on Health Excellence Awards

Health MEC Nomsa Jajula honours excellence in healthcare
delivery

19 November 2007

The Honourable MEC for Health, Mrs Nomsa Jajula hosted the annual Health
Excellence Awards on Friday, 16 November at the Vulindlela Village, Coega in
Port Elizabeth.

The main aim of the excellence awards is to recognise the efforts of those
healthcare providers who have gone beyond their call of duty to render
outstanding services to their communities with the intent to aid the department
in achieving the expected level of customer satisfaction. The awards commenced
in 2003 with the focus on the Cecilia Makiwane Awards which are an initiative
of the Ministry of Health in conjunction with the province.

The categories have grown over the years to include the best Emergency
Medical and Rescue Service District Office, best Human Resource Development
District Office, the Cecilia Makiwane Category as well as the Retirees Category
and best Project of the department. In awarding the winners, MEC Jajula said
that they together with the nominees had carried the Batho Pele principles all
of their lives. "With the team that we have in the department, we all have to
stand the test of time and to serve the people of the province and most
importantly meet our millennium goals," she said.

The awards also focused on the contribution not only by the department's
employees, but the communities as well. "We have a health promotions programme
with people who have taken upon themselves to make sure that in their
respective villages and surrounding areas, the fumes of love and trust are
there. They bring light to those in the darkness," she said.

She also added that the awards were a positive indication that the
department was committed to its vision. "The people that are here work for more
than twelve or 14 hours and they never complain. They believe that providing a
service is better than having a nice good sleep," MEC Jajula enthused. She
concluded her speech by calling on the youth to leave the taverns and come and
drive their programmes.

Dr Nandi Diliza, Deputy Director General for Clinical Services gave an
overview of the programme. "This ceremony is meant to recognise the efforts
made by different individuals and facilities. It is also to recognise and award
institutions that are excelling in complying with the healthcare delivery
system and processes as main objectives of these awards," said Dr Diliza.

These objectives are meant to also measure the levels of quality healthcare
rendered to our communities. "They are also to encourage a continuous quality
improvement in our institutions and recognise community involvement in
improving and enhancing service delivery," Dr Diliza added.
