Provincial and Local Government Deputy Minister N Hangana leads
march in support of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign

3 December 2007

The Deputy Minister of the Department of Provincial and Local Government, Ms
Nomatyala Hangana, will lead a march to the Union Buildings on Wednesday, 5
December 2007. This march will show support of the 16 Days of Activism on No
Violence Against Women and Children.

The issues of violence against women stem from a long history of
discrimination due to the patriarchal type of socialisation characteristic of
our country. Women were not discriminated against only through gender, but also
through the political landscape of old, even access to benefits from their
husbands' work in the cities whilst the women remained in the rural areas, was
always problematic.

The march will include such other government partners as the Department of
Arts and Culture (DAC), the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME), as well as
the Presidency as the custodian of the rights of the vulnerable. All government
departments will also actively support the campaign through the event and
beyond, remembering that in South Africa the view is that this is a 365 days a
year programme.
