The National Convener of the 16 Days of Activism for 'No Violence against
Women and Children,' Deputy Minister Nomatyala Hangana invites members of the
media to the launch of the 16 Days postcard campaign and lighting of the Torch
of Peace.
The South African Post Office has partnered with government by sponsoring
two million postcards which will raise funds for non-governmental organisations
(NGOs) that support survivors and victims of gender-based violence and abuse.
The postcard campaign is significant to the 16 Days campaign as it acts as an
interactive element for the public to participate in the campaign wherever they
are located. It also creates awareness on domestic violence related issues
through the messages it carries. Over and above the fundraising element, it
also serves as registration for the marches planned to take place in all the
provinces on 25 November 2007. The main march is scheduled for Bloemfontein,
Free State.
The 'Lighting of the Torch of Peace' is a symbol of the national campaign to
combat violence against women and children and to promote peace at home,
schools and communities. The Torch of Peace forms a link between the 16 Days of
Activism Campaign and other major national campaigns that support the thematic
programmes that underpin government's national outreach activities. The Torch
of Peace burns for the duration of the 16 Days campaign at the Union
Buildings.
