As part of the response to a request made to the North West MEC of Sport,
Arts and Culture, Ndleleni Duma, during his listening campaign recently, the
Directorate of Arts, Culture and Heritage, is set to host the inaugural North
West Writerâs Summit between 6 and 8 December 2006 at Potchefstroom. The
writerâs summit was conceived by MEC Duma, who whilst embarking on a listening
campaign was approached by a group of budding writers who voiced the hardships
and frustrations they are faced with as prospective authors and publishers in
the province.
The aim of the summit is to unearth ordinary youth of the province who
indicate a potential to become authors and writers of tomorrow, nurturing and
equipping them with the necessary skills and expertise required in becoming
marketable authors. A total of twenty (20) prospective writers from each of the
four districts have been selected on the basis of their potential in writing to
form part of the delegation at the summit, thus a total of eighty (80) writers
are expected to attend the summit. These are to form part of a delegation that
will be addressed by MEC Duma and representatives from support organisations
such as the Pan South African Language Board (PANSALB).
Authors of the calibre of Mathole Motshekga, Paul Rapetswa, and ZK Dipale
will form part of facilitators who will make presentations on various genres of
creative writing .The various genres that will be pursued comprise of
journalism (electronic and print media), prose (novel and short stories),
drama/ theatre (poetry, story telling and scripted drama), written music
(kwaito, traditional, etc), translating, editing and interpreting and public
speaking in the three official languages of the province.
