South African Foreign Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will participate in
a panel discussion at a Conference on Women in Agriculture and Rural
Development, under the auspices of the Ministry for Agriculture and Land
Affairs that will commemorate the International Rural Women's Day on 15 October
2006.
As part of the commemoration the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Affairs
will be hosting a conference on Women in Agriculture and Rural Development from
13 to 15 October 2006 in East London, Eastern Cape Province.
The theme of the conference is "Mobilisation of Rural Women for Social
Change." The conference will culminate in the launch an association of Women in
Agriculture and Rural Development in order to provide a mechanism through which
rural women can network and share experiences.
The launch will be attended by African Ministers of agriculture and land,
provincial Premiers and Members of Executive Committees (MECs) as well as our
rural women in the provincial and local sphere. The objectives of the
conference are:
* to keep rural development on the national agenda
* to share approaches for promoting economic stability of agriculture, farming
and maintaining a healthy, safe and abundant food supply in a thriving and
viable rural community
* to discuss issues affecting women in agriculture and land
* to create an enabling environment for rural women to participate in economic
empowerment programmes and various opportunities in the public sector.
