the first international day of non-violence
1 October 2007
New York â South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will on
Tuesday, 2 October join United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban ki Moon and
Sonja Gandhi in addressing the UN's First International Day of Non-Violence at
the UN Headquarters in New York.
The function is organised mainly to mark Mahatma Gandhi's contribution to
the philosophy of non-violence (Satyagraha) developed during his 21 years of
stay in South Africa. South Africa believes that more than ever before Gandhi's
philosophy remains relevant today as it was before.
Minister Dlamini Zuma is in New York leading the South African delegation to
the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly within the context of South
Africa's conviction that the multilateral system of global governance remains
the only hope in addressing current challenges facing humanity.
In this regard, Minister Dlamini Zuma is scheduled, today, Monday, 1
October, to hold further bilateral meetings with several of her counterparts
including:
* Foreign Minister of India
* Foreign Minister of Morocco
* Attend the annual co-coordinating meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of
community of democracies
* Attend the signing ceremony at the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP)
