arts, culture and heritage sector

Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture Ms Ntombazana Botha invites media to a
launch of an arts, culture and heritage internship programme. In 2005,
government launched the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South
Africa (AsgiSA) to fast-track economic growth and development. In terms of the
AsgiSA programme, lack of skills is one of the major constraints of economic
growth and development. The AsgiSA programme further identifies cultural
industries as one of the priority economic sectors.
It is against this background that the Department of Arts and Culture is
launching an internship programme for its associated institutions. The
associated institutions that will benefit from the programme include, inter
alia, Market Theatre, National Film and Video Foundation, Blind SA, National
Flagship Institution, State Theatre, Freedom Park, National Heritage Council,
Nelson Mandela Museum, Blindlip, Voortrekker Museum, Natal Museum, Iziko, South
African Resource Agency, National Museum, National English Literary Museum,
Performing Arts Centre of the Free State and the War Museum. The internship
programme will boost skills development in fields such as museology,
entornology, heritage, archives, library science, conversation management,
curatorship, arts administration and others. Details of the function are as
