N Balindlela to launch 16 Days of Activism, 25 Nov

Destitute persons, disabled persons, victims and survivors of
abuse to get early Christmas

23 November 2007

The Eastern Provincial Government will on 25 November 2007 practically
demonstrate its caring nature for the people of the province when it launches
this year's 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.
This year's event which will be held at Lusikisiki College in Ngquza Hill Local
Municipality will indeed be a unique event. Firstly Eastern Cape Premier will
hold a Christmas Party and a Food Parcel event for children of Magqamzeni
Location. The Premier will then join thousands of real and responsible men from
all over the Eastern Cape province who will be marching in Lusikisiki in
support of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children
campaign.

The Premier's work will not be done if she did not deliver tangible service
delivery outputs to the people of the province. On the day Premier Balindlela
and Housing and Local Government MEC Thoko Xasa will hand out a significant
amount of houses to the beneficiaries of the Lusikisiki Community from
disadvantaged backgrounds.

The beneficiaries comprise of women, elderly people, disabled persons and
the survivors of abuse in Ematlaneni and Nkonzo Villages. "This million men's
march that our government has come up with is a huge step in ensuring that men
in our country are active partners in raising awareness on gender based
violence and child directed abuse. I urge men from all over the province to
heed the clarion call that has been made and join the fight against women and
children abuse in numbers by instilling good African values of Ubuntu to the
boy children first and to their peers. I challenge them to ensure that men's
strength is for protection of Women and Children and not for hurting women and
children," said Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo Balindlela.

Background on 16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign
is an annual, United Nations (UN) endorsed, awareness-raising campaign that
begins on 25 November each year and runs till 10 December. The campaign is but
one element of government's yearlong, integrated and cross-sectoral drive to
eliminate the abuse of women and children. The Eastern Cape government hopes to
