Mpumalanga to visit Makhonjwa Mountain heritage sites, 19 May

Mpumalanga on a journey of rediscovery

17 May 2006

Mpumalanga Provincial Government and the National Heritage Research Council
(NHRC) will visit the heritage site, the historical Makhonjwa Mountain in
Barberton on Friday, 19 May 2006, as part of government‘s programme of visiting
historical and heritage sites under the theme “ Reclaiming the past, defining
the future”.

When launching the Mpumalanga Heritage Manuscript in March this year,
Premier Thabang Makwetla said, “We believe that among spin-offs of this
research will be the establishment of additional heritage sites, new tourist
routes, the production of films. Last but not least, this report should be a
valuable resource to educators for the exploration of local history in schools
and the compilation of books, websites and other promotional material.
Importantly, the province will no longer be found fascinating for its fauna and
flora only.”

He further said, “We have an ambitious plan to launch these findings.
Several on-site displays of these findings will be organised over a period of a
month to introduce the public to this heritage in its geographic space.”

Premier Thabang Makwetla, Members of the Executive Council, Executive
members of the NHRC and senior government officials are scheduled to
participate in a walking excursion to the mountains.
