percent of members of the Traditional Councils
8 November 2007
The Department of Local Government and Housing has appointed a service
provider to conduct the elections of 40 percent of the members of the
Traditional Councils in December 2007. The election of the members of the
Traditional Councils will be in terms of the Mpumalanga Traditional Leadership
and Governance Act, 2005. This Act states that the Traditional Leader will
nominate 60 percent of the members of the Traditional Council, and the other 40
percent will be elected by the communities under that traditional
jurisdiction.
To qualify to participate in the elections, a person must be:
* resident born within the traditional community
* 18 years and older
* hold a green South African Identity Document
* registered on the voters roll
* a member of the traditional community.
All residents are urged to visit their traditional authority offices to
inspect the voters roll and verify their names and details. Those who have not
registered to vote before are also urged to visit their respective traditional
offices to do so. For this purposes they need to bring the Identity Documents
with them.
In preparation for these elections the MEC for Local Government and Housing,
Candith Mashego-Dlamini will meet with all traditional leaders and headmen in
the province on 12 November 2007, to discuss the processes and procedures to be
followed during these elections.
The Independent Election Agency will start shortly with voter registration,
education and the nomination of candidates. Elections are expected to be held
before the end of December 2007. The exact date will be announced by the MEC as
soon as the lists of candidates have been submitted.
