The gap between government programmes or services and communities will soon
be history. Fifty nine Community Development Workers (CDWs) in Mpumalanga have
successfully completed their training programmes aimed at linking government
services to communities.
The graduates are the second group to be enrolled into the existing 326 CDWs
currently deployed in various municipalities in the province. Their presence in
municipalities helps at finding practical, effective ways of providing quality
services, particularly in rural areas where delivery has been slow. The
department is to soon recruit another 160 CDWs to be placed in other wards in
the different municipalities.
The CDW Programme is aimed at ensuring that communities' access vital
information to deal with challenges. CDWs are participatory change agents who
work in local communities and help them understand how they can participate in
plans for development. They assist in the smooth delivery of services by
identifying obstacles, strengthen the social contract between government
structures, link communities with government, support and nurture the increased
exchange of information and improve government community network. The
graduation ceremony is planned as follows:
