Water management and other related issues will come under the spotlight when
the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture and Land Administration (DALA) in
conjunction with the Mpumalanga Wetlands Forum host a Municipal Wetlands
workshop on Wednesday, 15 March 2006. Critical to mention is that wetlands
cover a wide range of municipal functions and thus requires a multi
disciplinary approach to manage them.
The date will also help to honour and celebrate both World Wetlands Day,
which took place on 2 February, and Water Week, which takes place between 20 -
24 March and also to acknowledge and highlight the important interrelationship
between the management of our water resources and the life supporting role of
our wetlands. This interrelationship has never been more evident considering
the recent attention that such issues have received in the province over the
past year or so. The workshop which specifically arranged for municipalities
will take into account the important role of local government in the management
of our water resources and wetlands.
It will discuss the following issues:
* Introduction and importance of wetlands and water management in
municipalities in providing important and free essential environmental
services.
* Wetlands norms and standards for development activities in municipal
areas.
* Laws protecting wetlands and the requirements to undertake activities in
Wetlands.
* How the working for water and the working for wetlands programme can assist
municipalities in water / wetlands management.
* Co-operation between the Mpumalanga Wetlands Forum and municipalities to
promote and ensure wetlands / water conservation in Mpumalanga.
