Development Conference
3 March 2006
Following the launch of the United Nation's (UN) Decade of Education for
Sustainable Development (DESD) in Nelspruit November last year, the province is
heading for the DESD conference on 9 March. The conference is the next stage of
deliberations and processes, which, the province will be engaged to in relation
to the programme. The conference, which will bring academics, civil society,
and interest groups and experts in various fields, follows the UN's declaration
of the period 2005 to 2014 as the Decade of Education for Sustainable
Development. The conference intends to craft a common understanding between
government and civil society to join hands in achieving sustainable development
in the province.
For the DESD to be successfully implemented in the province it is essential
that co-operation and commitment from economic sectors, social and
institutional driving forces be secured. The department through the Directorate
