R1 million for cleanest town in Mpumalanga

23 November 2007

The cleanest town in Mpumalanga will walk away with a cool R1 million at the
Provincial Cleanest Town Competition to be at the Grace Land Casino in Secunda
on Tuesday, 27 of November 2007.

The Cleanest Town Competition is a National initiative to promote
responsible waste management practises at local level. It is aimed at
encouraging municipalities the physical conditions of their localities,
encourages municipalities to educate the Public about the waste minimisation
and benefits of waste management and encourage municipalities to form
partnerships with their stakeholders in implementing waste management
practises.

The physical conditions such as the City Centre, township and village
accounts for 40% of the points whilst support systems such as waste
minimisation programme, implementation of waste management programme in
relation to the integrated development planning (IDP) account for 60% of the
points. The Gert Sibande Integrated Waste Management Plan informs the provinces
Waste Management Strategy which is about to be completed. The strategy
allocates waste management sites to various localities and the districts. The
Nkangala District site will be located within the Emalahleni and Steve Tshwete
node, Gert Sibande within Govan Mbeki and Ehlanzeni within Mbombela
Municipality.

Agriculture and Land Administration MEC Dina Pule calls on communities to
make money from waste by recycling as this limits the need for landfill sites.
The cleanest Town Competition forms part of the overall Greening Mpumalanga
flagship programme that involves tree planting and bio diversity
conservation.

90% of towns have participated in this year's competition. MEC Pule will
deliver a keynote address at the function. Steve Tshwete won last year's
competition. The winner will compete nationally at a ceremony still to be
announced.
