A Motshekga on SADTU intended mass meeting

Motshekga calls upon SADTU to stop intended mass meeting

4 August 2006

The Gauteng MEC for Education Angie Motshekga has called upon the South
African Democratic Teacher's Union (SADTU) to stop its intended mass meeting
tomorrow, Friday, 4 August 2006 at 12h00, which will negatively affect
education in Soweto.

The MEC said if SADTU goes ahead with the mass meeting, she will be left
with no choice but to terminate further discussions with the union.

Yesterday SADTU members attempted to disrupt a meeting of school principals
in Fourways and Braamfontein but police members managed to foil their
actions.

SADTU is currently participating in disruptive actions in Soweto claiming
the Gauteng Department of Education's action to deal with alleged corruption in
the Soweto District office is an attack on SADTU members.

"I have reached a stage where I feel SADTU is letting our education down. I
am currently in discussion with the provincial leadership of SADTU but at the
same time, they are disrupting education in Soweto. You cannot negotiate and
disrupt schooling at the same time," said Motshekga.

The Gauteng Department of Education is advising parents to be aware that
education in Soweto may be seriously affected from tomorrow at 12h00.

"We advise parents to take precautionary action while the department tries
to persuade SADTU to refrain from disrupting education in Soweto," said the
MEC.
