The MEC for Education in Gauteng, Ms Angie Motshekga, will tomorrow parade
the province top learners.
"I am proud of the 2006 Grade 12 learners, they have made the province proud
with their achievements," says MEC Motshekga.
The absolute numbers of full time candidates who entered for the Senior
Certificate (SC) has declined from 77 602 to 73 187. This decrease amounts to 4
415 learners or 5,68%. There is however a substantive increase in enrolment of
part time candidates by 3 498. There is a trend on increase in part time
candidate in the province over the last three to four years. The province is
proud to observe a 3,45% increase in the overall pass rate. The overall pass
rate improved substantially from 74,9% to 78,35%. In line with our policy to
ensure that more learners receive matric endorsement, the number of learners
that passed with endorsement has once more, increased from 21,10% to
23,20%.
Although a marginal increase of 2,10%, this reflects a qualitative
improvement in the pass rates. The increase in the overall pass rate is very
encouraging when compared to the decline of 1,82% and 4,75% experienced in 2005
and 2004 respectively.
It is also noted that 10 857 learners in the province produced a total of 21
607 distinctions. This represents 14,85% of the total learners that wrote the
examinations.
Our policy of promoting girl learners has once more paid dividends, as In
line with this development, the proportion of girl learners who obtained
distinctions is much greater than those produced by male learners.
"Our learners' excellent performances leave me with a deep feeling of
maternal pride. We are warmed and humbled by your efforts, which have placed
you among the very best in the country," concludes MEC Motshekga.
The Gauteng Department of Education will officially release their results at
Wits College of Education, 27 St. Andrews Road, Parktown. The function starts
at 10h00.
