Risks posed by seismic events in gold mining districts: study
findings

A team of local and international experts was appointed by the Department of
Minerals and Energy to investigate the risks to miners, mines and the public
posed by seismic events in gold mining districts, following a large tremor that
caused damage to buildings and injuries to people in the town of Stilfontein in
March 2005. The investigation, led by Dr Ray Durrheim from the Council for
Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has been completed and the report is
now ready for release.
