Acting President Angie Motshekga conveys condolences to families of Presidential Protection Service Members involved in an accident

The Acting President of the Republic of South Africa, Mrs Angie Motshekga, has conveyed her heartfelt condolences to all the families of the Presidential Protection Services members who were on duty with the Deputy President when an accident took place on Sunday that claimed the life of one of the members.

The accident occurred in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

Three members of the PPS who were in one of the vehicles sustained serious injuries and one of the members was declared dead at the scene while the other two were transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

56 year-old Warrant Officer Thomas Shongwe was confirmed dead on the scene. The Acting President has sent her condolences to the Shongwe family, friends and colleagues.

She has also wished a speedy recovery to the two injured PPS members.

A 50 year-old Captain and a 44 year-old Warrant officer were admitted in hospital following the accident.

The Warrant Officer who sustained injuries has since been discharged while the Captain is still in a critical condition in hospital.

The Acting President will visit the affected families and engage the Shongwe family and the SAPS in the preparations for the funeral of the deceased member.
