Skills Development Conference 2006 kicks off

17 October 2006

The Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mr Marthinus van
Schalkwyk, together with Members of the Executive Council (MECs) responsible
for tourism in all nine provinces, the National Business Institute (NBI), and
the Tourism, Sport, Hospitality, Education and Training Authority (THETA),
identified the need to broaden participation by key stakeholders in the shaping
of the country's national agenda for tourism development.

The Skills Development Conference is a multi-stakeholder, cross sectional
platform set to facilitate national dialogue and debate on key strategic issues
affecting the skills development within the tourism industry.

The theme for this year's conference is "Building a Skills Partnership in
Tourism". The theme was chosen within the context of some of the findings of
our skills development research. The conference will enable various
stakeholders, both public and private sector, to engage, agree and commit on a
common programme of action and provide a basis of setting achievable targets in
identified areas.

Present at the conference will be the Premier of Gauteng province, Mr M
Shilowa, Dr Danisa Baloyi (industry representative), Mr Z Vavi, Congress of
South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) representative, Mr T Mahlangu (Chairperson
of THETA) and other roleplayers from the tourism industry.

All media is invited.
