report on the Klebsiella outbreak

The Minister of Health Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang together with the
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health Ms Neliswa Nkonyeni, respectively will tomorrow,
18 August 2007, visit Mahatma Gandhi at to check on the progress made since the
release of the report on the Klebsiella outbreak leading to the death of new
borns.
In 2005 a number of babies died following a klebsiella outbreak at one
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Durban. The Department of Health launched
an investigation into the causes of death. The report was released to the
public with infrastructure and other operational improvement recommendations
being made by the Investigating Team.
They will then proceed to Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital where there have
been serious tensions and complaints about the hospital management. This lead
to the change of Hospital Management and the appointment of the new Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Gwala. The Minister and the MEC will be visiting
these hospitals from 07h00 to check on the improvements made and other
corrective measures that have been implemented.
They will then proceed to the Women's Day event in uMzumbe where the
Minister and the MEC will celebrate the Women's Month with the people of
uMzumbe at Mleyi Sports Grounds from 09h00.The media is invited to join the
Minister and the MEC for their programme of the day.
