M Tshabalala-Msimang to open World Conference on Injury Prevention and
Safety Promotion, 2 Apr

World experts and policymakers meet to discuss ways to curb
growing incidents of preventable injuries and deaths from violent attacks and
accidents in Africa

30 March 2006

You are invited to an opening ceremony of the eighth World Conference on
Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion to be held at the International
Conference Centre (ICC) in Durban on Sunday, 2 April, from 14h00.

The ceremony starts with an official opening address by the Minister of
Health, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang at 14h00, and Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of
Jordan, who is a patron of safety and violence prevention, will deliver the
keynote address.

It is the first time this global conference will be held in Africa. This is
significant because most violent or injury-related events occur in
low-income/middle-income countries, which perpetuates poverty and hampers
development.

The theme of the conference is: Securing Safety as a Right. Over 1000
delegates are to attend representing 121 countries.

The four-day programme presents an unprecedented gathering of experts across
the globe. Regional Director for World Health Organisation (WHO) in Africa, Dr
Luis Sambo, and UNISA principal, Prof Barney Pityana, will give
presentations.

The presentations will cover Road Safety, Violence Prevention, Trauma
Management, Workplace/Institutional/Home Safety; Leisure/Sport/Product Safety;
Safe Communities; Data Production/Consumption; and
Cross-Sectoral/Multi-Disciplinary Linkages.
