M Tshabalala-Msimang to open Women’s Health Summit, 21 Aug

Minister Tshabalala-Msimang to officially open the Women’s
Health Summit

18 August 2006

Minister of Health, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, will officially open the
Women’s Health Summit to be held at Ben Maree Hall in Rustenberg, North West on
21 - 23 August.

A major barrier for women to the achievement of the highest attainable
standard of health is inequality, both between women and men and among women in
different geographical regions, social classes and indigenous and ethnic
groups. Women are affected by many of the same health conditions as men but
women experience them differently.

Experts have been invited to share their experiences on these issues:
* status of women’s health in South Africa
* quality health services for women with disabilities
* gender-based violence
* Choice of Termination of Pregnancy Act
* saving mothers recommendations and implementation
* role of midwife in reducing maternal mortality
* cervical cancer and HIV.

Journalists are invited to a press conference to be held after the Minister
of Health’s opening address as follows:
Date: Monday, 21 August 2006
Time: 10h00
Venue: Ben Maree Hall, Rusternberg
