Minister Tshabalala-Msimang launches awareness campaign on
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and condom use

7 February 2007

Pretoria: Health Minister Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang will on 11 February
2007 launch the awareness campaign on Sexually Transmitted Infections and
condom use as part of her Department's strategy to curb the spread of sexually
transmitted infections.

The Campaign is one of the significant programmes of the Department of
Health and it is geared at achieving the following:

* increase awareness on STIs and encourage the use of condoms
* increase public knowledge about the symptoms and management of all STIs
including HIV and AIDS
* support healthcare workers in their management of people with STIs.

The theme for this year's campaign is "Stop STIs. Keep the Promise." The
theme incorporates some crucial elements of World AIDS Day 2006 and this
further reinforces the department's commitment in the fight against STIs and
other infections including HIV and AIDS.

Among the dignitaries expected to attend the launch of this weeklong
campaign is the Premier of the North West province, Ms Edna Molewa and her
Health MEC, Ms Nomonde Rasmeni.

Members of the media are invited to attend the event and your attention is
drawn to the following important details:

Date: 11 February 2007
Time: 10h00
