The Minister of Health Manto Tshabalala-Msimang will announce the
acquisition of additional ambulances for all nine provinces and launch a new
emergency medical service (EMS) station at Bela Bela, in Limpopo tomorrow,
Thursday, 13 December 2007.
The procurement of new emergency vehicles and helicopters and the building
of emergency medical service stations are part of the Department of Health's
initiative to modernise and enhance the emergency medical services throughout
the country. All provinces have prioritised modernisation of emergency medical
services in their budget and an additional R286 million has been allocated for
this programme.
The procurement of new ambulances comes at an opportune time to support the
national "Arrive Alive" Campaign to reduce the impact of road accidents during
the festive season.
