Health Minister Dr Manto Tshabalala�Msimang will join thousands of elderly
people in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, to celebrate the International Day of Older
Persons. Close to 200 old people are expected to attend the event.
The theme for this year is: 'Improving Quality of Life for Older Persons:
Advancing United Nations (UN) Global Strategies.'
The government strives to have the necessary policies in place to create an
appropriate environment for our older persons, which will enable us to reach
the goals identified in the United Nations principles for Older Persons. The
principles included independence, participation, care, self-fulfilment and
dignity.
Activities of the day will include screening for health problems and
distribution of tokens, indoor exercises for a healthy lifestyle by Geriatric
Support Group, and presentation of the floating trophy for 'best provincial
Geriatrics Programme.'
The Minister of Health will be joined by MEC for Health in Gauteng Mr Brian
Hlongwa, as well as top officials from provincial and local governments.
