World Diabetes Day

10 November 2006

World Diabetes Day for 2006 will be celebrated next week Tuesday 14 November
at Galeshewe, Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province.

Health Minister Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang is expected to attend the event,
and will be accompanied by the Premier Ms Dipuo Peter and the Health MEC Ms
Shiwe Selao.

This year's theme is: "Diabetes care for everyone."

The Department of Health has adopted a risk-based approach in preventing
non-communicable diseases, hence the focus on risk factors like inactivity,
unhealthy eating habits, smoking, alcohol abuse and many more.

Our failure to take care of our bodies through unhealthy eating habits and
not exercising puts us at risk for diseases such as hypertension, heart
diseases, diabetes and cancer.

South Africa has embraced the challenge of the global 'Move for Health'
initiatives, and we launched our campaign on 30 May 2005.

During this year's celebration of World Diabetes Day, the emphasis is
therefore being placed on healthy living. There will be a health walk from
Seocwareng Old Age Home to the cricket grounds, aerobics exercises and a visit
to a nearby health facility.

Well-known singer, Ntando, will entertain the crowds.

The media is invited to attend and cover the event, which takes place as
follows:
Date: 14 November 2006
Time: 09h00
Venue: Yorkshire Cricket Grounds, Galeshewe
