Minister of Health to announce progress on the implementation
of improved salaries for nurses

13 November 2007

Date: Friday, 14 December 2007
Time: 9h30 to 12h00
Venue: Pelonomi Hospital, Bloemfontein, Free State

The Minister will hand over the cheques to the first group of nurses that
are benefiting from improved salaries for nurses in the country at Pelonomi
Hospital, Bloemfontein tomorrow morning between 10h00 and 11h00.

This symbolic presentation of cheques officially kick-starts the process of
paying nurses. All provinces are supposed to pay by 19 December 2007.

Nurses' salaries are being adjusted by between 20% and 24% with certain
professional nurses receiving up to 88% increases, a decision that was
announced two months ago.

The salary adjustments are being backdated to July 2007, leading to all
nurses getting a substantial back pay.

The Department of Health has allocated R1,45 billion to increase the
salaries of nurses in this financial year.

Briefing for the media will be at the Trauma Unit Counsel Room at 10h00.
