Nurses from the nine provinces will this week compete for the highest
honours in their profession, the Cecilia Makiwane Nurses Recognition Award and
the Marilyn Lahana Trust Award.
These are just two of the nine award categories that will be awarded to
outstanding health workers at the Excellence in Health Care Awards event to be
held on Friday, 23 November 2007 in Midrand, Johannesburg.
The Cecilia Makiwane award is named after the first black person to be
registered as a professional nurse in South Africa and is awarded by the
Department of Health to those who have gone beyond the call of duty in
rendering nursing services.
The Marilyn Lahana Trust Award is administered by the Democratic Nursing
Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) and awarded to an outstanding member of
the nursing and midwifery profession who have shown a special quality of caring
and dedication in relation to their patients and colleagues.
Other awards to be presented during the ceremony are:
* Hospital Association of South Africa Awards for the best private
hospital
* South African Medical Association Awards for the medical profession
* South African Pharmacy Council Awards for the best pharmacists
* Health Professions Council of South Africa Awards for outstanding registered
practitioner
* Alfred Nzo Environmental Health Achievement Awards for environmental
officers
* District Health Systems Awards for the best performing district
The media is invited to a gala dinner to be addressed by the Minister of
Health, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, in honour of the outstanding health
professionals in the country.
