Workshop on the 2010 World Cup African Legacy Programme: 6-7
March

The South African government in collaboration with the African Union (AU)
Commission and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee will be
hosting a workshop on the planning of activities for the International Year of
African Football and for the 2010 World Cup African Legacy Programme from
Tuesday, 6 March to Wednesday, 7 March in Pretoria. The workshop will be
officially opened by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Reverend Makhenkesi
Stofile, and H.E. Advocate Bience Gawanas, AU Commissioner for Social
Affairs.

The purpose of the workshop is to make operational, the implementation of
the Declaration of the 8th African Union Assembly, adopted on 30 January 2007,
on the International Year of African Football, as well as the 2010 African
Legacy Programme. In pursuance of the implementation of the Declaration, the AU
Commission has been mandated to, inter alia, organise the relevant Conference
of Ministers of Sport to provide leadership to the organisation of the
activities, as well as to elaborate concrete activities in connection with the
2010 World Cup.

The workshop will produce recommendations and a programme to be rolled out
for the implementation of the International Year of African Football and the
African Legacy Programme for consideration by the above-mentioned AU Conference
of Ministers of Sport, which is planned for May 2007.
