Gauteng to unveil Social Development Strategy

17 October 2006

Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will next week release the province's Social
Development Strategy that was recently approved by the Executive Council.

The strategy will be unveiled at a stakeholders meeting where various
sectors of society will be interacting.

The Gauteng Social Development Strategy (GSDS) puts forward various ways in
which communities and individuals can be assisted to break out of the cycle of
poverty and dependency on grants. It works together with other provincial
strategies including the Growth and Development Strategy, the newly released
Human Resource Development Strategy and the Globally Competitive City Region
perspective to holistically grow society.

The key principles underlying the GSDS are:

* proactive intervention to prevent the occurrence of social problems
* optimal social development of individuals, families and communities through
investing in human capital development and promoting the spirit of Ubuntu
* challenging social exclusion by promoting inclusivity and civil society
participation
* government to work as an enabler of local economic development.

The GSDS is a government-led initiative that applies to all sectors of
society and reinforces the approach of all sectors working together in
partnership to achieve the common goal of creating a better life for all.

Details are as follows:

Date: Monday, 23 October 2006
Venue: Pyramid Conference Centre, 96 Eloff Street Extension, Village Deep,
