Premier to launch human resource development strategy

22 September 2006

Gauteng Premier, Mbhazima Shilowa, will launch the human resource
development (HRD) strategy for Gauteng on Tuesday, 26 September 2006.

A number of Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) strategies are aimed at
meeting the objectives of the medium-term priorities of government and
overcoming the socio-economic challenges identified, such as the Growth and
Development Strategy (GDS) and the Global City Region (GCR) strategy.

A key lever identified across all these strategies is human resource
development and in particular providing a quality supply of skills for key
economic and social sectors, promoting shared growth through building social
capital and expanding the opportunities available to the poor.

The Gauteng Provincial Government, through the Office of the Premier and the
Gauteng Department of Education embarked on a process to develop the HRD
strategy for the province last year. Rated the fourth largest economy on the
continent, Gauteng can ill-afford to let the skills problem worsen.

This has resulted in a provincial strategy responding to the challenges
identified and thereby maximising human capital for shared growth. The vision
of the strategy is to develop employable, entrepreneurial and smart people.

The vision is based on the HRD imperatives contributing towards a knowledge
intensive and smart province, while supporting the drive to eradicate poverty
and unemployment. The mission of the province is to facilitate the development
and integration of HRD initiatives within Gauteng in order to address key
provincial socio-economic imperatives in line with national policy
frameworks.

Expected guests and speakers at the launch include Deputy President Phumzile
Mlambo-Ngcuka, Gauteng MEC for Education Angie Motshekga, and executive
mayors.
