Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will this week launch two key initiatives
to fulfil commitments he made during his State of the Province address last
month.
On Thursday, 29 March 2007, Shilowa and Gauteng Sport MEC Barbara Creecy
launch Gauteng's 2010 Strategy which sets out the province's priorities in
contributing to preparations for a successful 2010 Federation International
Football Association (FIFA) World Cup tournament.
On Friday, 30 March 2007, Shilowa and Gauteng Community Safety MEC Firoz
Cachalia will launch the Gauteng Safety Strategy and the Take Charge
Campaign.
1. Gauteng 2010 Strategy
Over 400 stakeholders are expected to attend the launch of the Gauteng 2010
strategy, under the theme "Gauteng 2010: Hosting a successful FIFA World Cup,
Leaving a Lasting Legacy".
The event will be addressed by Shilowa, FIFA 2010 Local Organising Committee
(LOC) CEO Danny Jordaan and MEC Creecy. LOC representatives, government and
civil society stakeholders will participate in a range of commissions on the
Gauteng city region's infrastructure and transport, business opportunities,
sport development, volunteerism and marketing. A key focus of the strategy will
be to ensure readiness to host a world-class tournament and leave a lasting
legacy for shared growth and development in the province.

2. Provincial Safety Strategy
Friday, 30 March 2007, will see the Premier and MEC Cachalia launch the
Gauteng Safety Strategy, which provides a comprehensive framework to tackle
crime in the province.
The mass event kick-starts the Take Charge campaign and the launch of a
broad based social movement against crime. This follows consultations with a
range of civil society stakeholders including; business, labour, gender
organisations, youth formations, faith-based organisations, hostel dwellers and
Community Policing Forums (CPFs).
