excellence
14 November 2007
The Gauteng Provincial Government is celebrating service excellence among
public servants for the sixth time this year by hosting the annual Premier's
Service Excellence Awards (PSEA).
Held under theme "A better Gauteng is in the making", the awards were
introduced in 2002 to inspire, promote and reward excellent performance in the
public service. It forms part of a series of provincial government measures to
improve service delivery, make the public service more responsive to people's
needs and improve overall performance.
An independent panel of judges from civil society assessed the various
projects and interacted with users of services as a further measure to ensure
that the public's views were heard.
Twelve teams were selected as finalists in the two main award categories:
Face of government and back office support. They now compete for the bronze,
silver and gold awards for their efforts. The best of the best teams will be
awarded the platinum trophy. The award ceremony will be held on the evening of
Thursday, 22 November 2007 at The Castle in Kyalami.
Last year, the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site won the platinum
trophy. Other winners included the Lebone College of Emergency Care and the
Kopanong Hospital Food Services department.

The Premier's Service Excellence Awards encourage public servants to
implement Batho Pele principles and give recognition to those who go beyond the
call of duty in serving the people of Gauteng. The principles, which seek to
improve service delivery, are: consultation, service standards, access,
courtesy, information, openness and transparency, redress, giving best value,
innovation and reward, customer impact, and leadership.
The awards help transform organisational culture, develop a professional
public service corps and promote government as a quality organisation that is
continuously improving itself to speed up service delivery and improve the
lives of the people of Gauteng. The aim is to identify best practice and
centres of excellence within the provincial government with a view to extending
this throughout the relevant institutions and the provincial government as a
whole.
Other measures to boost service delivery include better performance
management, monitoring and evaluation systems, the setting of service standards
and Service Charters, e-governance and the promotion of the Batho Pele
revitalisation campaign.
The awards ceremony on 22 November 2007 will be addressed by Premier
Mbhazima Shilowa and will feature Cass Naidoo and Tumisho Masha as MCs. It will
be attended by MECs, Heads of Departments, senior managers as well as the teams
of finalists.
