Outstanding female farmers in Gauteng will be honoured by Premier Mbhazima
Shilowa at a gala evening on Thursday, 24 August 2006.
The 2006 Female Farmer of the Year Awards will be hosted by the Gauteng
Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment and will also be
attended by MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu.
Four winners are expected to emerge at this year's prestigious Female Farmer
of the Year event, who will proceed to compete in the National Female Farmer of
the Year event in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, 26 August 2006.
The provincial winners in the Top Producer for Export Market, Top Producer
for National Markets, Top Producer for Informal Markets and Top Producer for
Household Use categories will share a total of R210 000 in prize money.
The Female Farmer of the Year Project was initiated in 1999 by the national
Department of Agriculture as a tool to empower women and female farmers in
particular. The project is also aimed at boosting economic growth throughout
the agricultural value chain and to enhance the country's food sustainability
status.
