Gauteng gears up for Heritage Day celebrations

12 September 2007

The Gauteng Provincial Government in partnership with the West Rand District
Municipality, Mogale City Local Municipality and the Cradle of Humankind World
Heritage Site Management Authority will host the provincial Heritage Day
celebrations at Maropeng, the world class visitor centre for The Cradle of
Humankind World Heritage Site on 24 September 2007.

Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will deliver a keynote address. Gauteng
MECs, Executive Mayors of West Rand District Municipality, Mogale City Local
Municipality and councillors are expected to attend the event.

The Heritage Day celebrations are aimed at recognising and celebrating our
rich cultural diversity. This year's theme will be "Celebrating poetry in
indigenous languages".

Heritage Day 2007 will see a celebration of our diverse languages through
poetry, and throughout September Gauteng residents in all communities will
celebrate South African languages through poetry in pursuit of our shared
identity.

Heritage is an accumulation of all our achievements, our wisdom, our art,
poetry and the eleven languages spoken in our country.

This family fun day will be filled with a range of activities ranging from
indigenous games, kiddies entertainment area and cultural programmes which will
include local and top South African musicians.

Other interesting activities for the day will be a craft fair of high
quality, locally produced goods.

This is the second time that Heritage Day will be hosted by the world-class
visitors centre with its exhibition on the origins and evolution of
humankind.

About 20 000 people from around Gauteng are expected to attend the
celebrations.
