The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) will host the first meeting
of the Joint Trade and Investment Committee between the Republic of South
Africa and the Republic of Yemen. The joint committee was established in
September last year by the Minister of Trade and Industry Mandisi Mpahlwa and
his Yemeni counter-part, Dr Khalid Rajesh Shaikh, during Minister Mpahlwaâs
visit to Yemen.
The meeting of the joint committee will take place at the dti Group Campus
in Sunnyside, Tshwane, on Monday, 8 May 2006. The six-member Yemeni delegation,
which comprises of government and business officials, will be led by Salem
Salman, Assistant Undersecretary for International Relations in the Yemeni
Ministry of Trade and Industry. George Monyemangene, the Chief Director in the
International Trade and Economic Development Division of the dti, will lead the
South African government delegation.
The tasks of the joint committee include devising strategies, exploring
opportunities, and presenting proposal to enhance and strengthening trade and
economic relations between the two countries. The committee is also responsible
for identifying and evaluating investment and trade opportunities in the
following areas; oil and gas, tourism, minerals and mining, fisheries and
agriculture, manufactured items and construction.
The Yemeni delegation will hold meetings with sector specialists in the dti and
visit the Coega Industrial Development Zone in Port Elizabeth, and hold a
meeting with the Western Cape Investment Promotion Agency (WESGRO) in Cape
Town.
