Labour Minister welcomes rise in job stats

13 December 2006

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana has welcomed the latest figures as
provided by Statistics South Africa, showing the rise in job creation during
the third quarter in September.

The Minister's applaud came after Stats SA announced that the much needed
jobs have increased by 73 000 in the formal non-agricultural sector.

Reports for the September Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey
showed that the number of people employed in the formal non agricultural
business sector increased by 1 percent from June to September to an estimated
7,4 million.

"While nobody often thanks the workers of this country for economic growth
and job creation, I want to take this opportunity to do so and wish that this
trend should continue until next year," he said.

According to the survey this reflected an annual increase of about 193 000
or 2,7 percent from last September's estimated 7,2 million employees.

The Labour Force Survey, which was released in September and includes both
the formal and informal sectors, showed that the overall level of employment
rose by 544 000 from March 2005 to March 2006.
