The Department of Labour has handed over the long awaited Sasol Report to
the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana
said today.
The Minister's comments follow the probe by inspectors in the department's
occupational health and safety unit, which was given to the Director-General Dr
Vanguard Mkosana before being passed on to him.
The probe was prompted by the blasts that resulted in the deaths of at least
10 people and injuries to several others.
"When the report came to us, we applied our minds considering that this is a
very sensitive matter. We had to be as circumspect as possible. By passing it
onto the NPA, we believe it is in the hands of good people who will help bring
finality to the issue that has occupied the minds of many people in the
country, Minister Mdladlana said.
Meanwhile, the department is to embark on a series of nationwide campaigns
to raise awareness about occupational health and safety starting on Monday.
The campaign will be targeted at schools, workplaces, shopping malls and big
and small business.
