2007 lead a series of blitz inspections in the construction industry in the
Western Cape
27 February 2007
The five-day raid will concentrate mainly on compliance with Occupational
Health and Safety in the construction industry following a spate of fatalities
and injuries that have dogged the sector in recent months.
Minister Mdladlana will also use the opportunity to caution employers in the
industry against the contravention of Occupational Health and Safety
regulations as well as raise awareness to workers.
At the moment South Africa is currently experiencing a high volume of
construction activities around infrastructure development in preparation for
the 2010 World Cup, which includes building of stadiums, roads, accommodation
facilities and the Gautrain.
Among the sites to be visited is the Berg River Dam project near Franschoek.
The project consists of a dam embankment, intake tower, concrete spill way and
outlet works.
More than 1 100 workers are employed in the project, which is valued at R650
000 000.
