More learners set to benefit from skills training drive

2 August 2006

The ranks of young people securing job opportunities through the
government’s national skills empowerment drive are swelling by the day. Only
three days after Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana officiated at the
graduation ceremony of 262 Information Technology (IT) trainees, with 87
percent of them already placed for employment in various government
departments, a similar occasion will be unfolding in Johannesburg tomorrow
(Thursday).

This time the private sector companies have absorbed most of the
manufacturing and engineering newly-skilled operators who will be receiving
their NQF Level 1 National Certificates at the Johannesburg City Hall. The 58
learners, products of a partnership between the MERSETA (Manufacturing,
Engineering and Related Services Seta) and the Employment and Skills
Development Lead Employer (ESDLE) – have all secured employment with 13
different companies.

The Learnership programme was run in conjunction with approved Further
Education and Training (FET) colleges and host employers in Gauteng most of
which are small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) and Black Economic
Empowerment (BEE) companies in need of skills development support.

Flexitech, one of the companies that have employed the trainees, has pledged
to train an additional 80 unemployed learners and employ a further 20 learners
(NQF level 1 and 2) for the duration of this year. Minister Mdladlana will
deliver a keynote address of the ceremony. The media is invited. Time and
