Government spending on skills empowerment is taking to new heights, with
rural communities set to share a whopping R1 billion in training over the next
three years.
In what has been dubbed the "Skills Imbizo," Labour Minister Membathisi
Mdladlana will hand out nine symbolic cheques of about R100 million each to
provincial Premiers during the National Skills Fund Provincial Strategic
Projects launch in Idutywa, Eastern Cape on 2 December 2006.
Funded from the Labour Department's National Skills Fund (NSF), the venture
aims to help provide various critical and scarce skills to about 360 000 South
African rural youths between 2007 and 2009.
The NSF has made the funds available in support of provincial governments'
skills development initiatives under Provincial Growth and Development
Strategies.
In what will be presenting an early Christmas for rural South Africans, the
who's who in the country's skills fraternity converging at the Idutywa Stadium
on that day will bear witness to yet another milestone in South Africa's
ongoing war against poverty.
