Minister
7 May 2007
The MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment in the North West
Province, Mandlenkosi Mayisela, has welcomed the postponement on the
implementation date for the regulations on threatened and, promulgated by the
National Minister for Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Marthinus van
Schalkwyk, earlier this year.
The new regulations were due to take effect on 1 June 2007.
"The new implementation date for the regulations, 1 February 2008, gives us
breathing room as we weigh options and continue dialogue with the national
Minister. Hopefully we can still achieve a more favourable compromise for our
province."
"Even though our stance is not fully addressed by the postponement, we
nevertheless welcome it and see this as an opportunity to engage further in the
remaining six months," said Mayisela.
