18 July 2006
Mafikeng: The North West MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment,
Mandlenkosi Mayisela, will tomorrow, Wednesday, 19 July, enforce the
environmental legislation during a roadblock aimed at deterring those
contravening the environmental law.
According to the law, anyone who is engaged in the transportation of
dangerous substances or who is doing any illegal trading of fauna and flora
without a legal permit to do so, should be prosecuted.
MEC Mayisela will be leading a team of members of the Defence Force, police
officers and environmental management inspectors (EMIs), who will during the
day stop and search vehicles for environmental legislation non-compliance.
Those found to be not complying with the law, will be apprehended.
Mayisela will later officially launch the first batch of provincial EMIs,
whose main responsibility will be to ensure that environmental criminals are
brought to book.
âThese EMIs are the ones who will ensure that no one continues to
deliberately degrade our environment and compromise our well-being. We are now
launching them with the sole purpose of informing criminals to be that the
freedom of not complying with the law is now over. These EMIs now have all
powers to search and seize anything unlawful,â explained Mayisela.
Members of the media are requested to form part of the MEC's team that will
be going to the roadblock spot at 10h30.
